TIP 21
Creating a
swipe book can be great inspiration in the creative process. Search the
Internet, videos, books, magazines, etc. for imagery and text that can help you
to visualize the content you are working with. Place this material in a central
place for easy access. You never know where inspiration will come from.

TIP 22
Using
statistics can be a boring affair for both the filmmaker and the viewer. Decide
which statistics best define the problem and use only those few that lend
weight in getting the idea across. A few important numbers that the viewer pays
attention to are more effective than a litany of numbers that no one pays
attention to. Seeing and hearing the statistic at the same time gives the
number weight.

THE MUSIC BED - Of course the type of project
you are creating doesn't necessarily need music. The words, the visuals and the
emotions of the people you portray can easily carry the show. You may want to
use what is called a ‘bed’. A music bed is music who’s sole purpose is to fill
in the background. Having music that is not obvious and low in volume fill in
the audio space and can make it feel more rich and full. It can absolutely
inform the viewer of the emotional state of the film and subjects at that
moment. Music beds can be found on the free music sites described in this blog
and can be created in Apple's Garage Band application. If you would like to
learn how to use Garage Band, see you teacher.

Check out
these sites for legally free music:
incompetech
uncopyrightedrock
FMA (read this info to make sure you may legally use music from this site)
freepd (PD stands for Public Domain, meaning no one has rights to this music
and can be used in any way the possessor wishes)
Check out the FAQ's and other areas on these sites for proper credit and usage. Often to use this free music it is requested that the owners of the music be given credit.
You may run across more sites that offer music for free (usage and cost). Let the teacher know if you have found a new source and it will be added to this list.
Be aware that many sites appear to offer music for free and clear of copyright restrictions, but often that is not the case. Check out the site carefully and make sure you may use the music and you do not have to pay anything for it.
Most downloadable music is in the MP3 file format. FCP does not like MP3’s. Open up the music you downloaded in QuickTime Player and save as a .mov file. You’re now good to go. If you come across a file format that is not compatable with FCP follow the above procedure to also convert those files into .mov file format.
